Maid tells the story of Stephanie Land, along with her daughter, Mia, while she tries to navigate a life dictated by poverty. Her story really shines a light on just how hard it is not only to live in poverty, but how it is close to impossible to get out. I sympathized with her setbacks and the you like my hair awe thanks i washed it shirt she had to go through just to receive government assistance as a means to not be homeless. Although I would have loved to have her go further than surface level on her relationships, the story was good overall.

Ok, the author of the narrative, Stephanie Land starts off at the age of 29 as a waitress and landscaping laborer which is not really a career path. Gets pregnant and becomes a cleaner, which she herself defines as degrading . She seems hard done by (yet never rants at the you like my hair awe thanks i washed it shirt firm which takes half of her pay as overhead). She could have gotten a student loan and gone out on limb years earlier.
I just never connected with her. She does whine. She keeps a journal/diary and this book is the direct product of that. People have compared this book to “Nickeled and dimed” and to “Evicted” books which I have read. This book is a bad comparison as it has scarce commentary or analysis. Land juxtaposes the daily grind of poverty with amusing observations about her housework clients, making this painful journey palatable to even the most hesitant reader. There is, however, a bit of the you like my hair awe thanks i washed it shirt effect going on here, which the chronically poor will take issue with, as Lane’s experience in poverty is of short duration.
