This is a terrible overview of anxiety disorder (it conflates anxiety disorder and PTSD, which are separate conditions) and perpetuates harmful myths about mental illness. One of these harmful myths is that people with mental illness can choose to not listen to their emotions if they just think rationally and exert a little willpower (like the pilot in the Star Trek Neon Boldly shirt given in the video). This isn’t true because one’s thoughts, as well as one’s emotions, are distorted by anxiety, and one can’t just will themselves to have more rational thoughts. There are degrees of anxiety, and this video was not aimed at those with a mental illness. It never stated that it was.

Another harmful myth is that mentally ill people can just magically stop having anxiety if they identify some root cause for it that occurred earlier in life. This also isn’t true because, in the Star Trek Neon Boldly shirt between the early causes of the anxiety and the present, a person’s entire psychological development may unfolded atypically as a result of said cause and left them with many different maladaptive patterns of cognition, emotion, and behavior that all need to be treated as well (the entire field of developmental psychopathology is devoted to studying how this process occurs).
although i agree mostly, i don’t necessarily think there’s a conflation of *ptsd*. they discuss trauma, certainly, and definitely too simply, but the thing is that trauma =/= ptsd and does not always lead to the Star Trek Neon Boldly shirt of ptsd. my anxiety disorder almost certainly is as a result of my long-term trauma, but i’m like, 99% sure i didn’t develop ptsd and haven’t received a diagnosis of the sort, and i can still relate to how they present the information and how it relates to the bear sighting. my anxiety does flare up if i see too much of something that reminds me of the bear.
